I started Lowkey Excavating because I wanted full ownership of the standard of work I was delivering. Based in Whangarei and servicing Northland, I bring the same attention to detail and work ethic to every job, whether it is a small residential trench or a substantial earthworks project.
How It Started
I got into the trade naturally. I have always been hands-on, always enjoyed working with the land, and when I started in the industry it became clear quickly that this was something I wanted to take seriously and build a career around.
My apprenticeship took me across a range of residential projects, where I learned the fundamentals the right way: accuracy, work ethic, and the importance of not cutting corners. That foundation gave me a strong understanding of how projects should run from start to finish, and it is an approach I have carried with me ever since.
After establishing Lowkey Construction, I recognised an opportunity to offer clients a more complete service by adding dedicated excavation work to what I could deliver. Lowkey Excavating was born from the same values that built Lowkey Construction: high standards, clear communication, and work that holds up over time.
How I Work
To me, a good excavation job is clean, precise, and well considered. Everything sits at the right level, drains correctly, and sets the next trade up to do their best work. It should feel solid and stand the test of time.
I know a job has been done properly when the details are right, even the parts that are not immediately visible. If nothing has been rushed or overlooked and the client is genuinely satisfied, that is when I am confident in the result. It is a standard I apply consistently, regardless of the size of the job.
The thing I am most particular about on site is finish and detail. Anyone can move dirt. Achieving a clean, consistent result across every aspect of an excavation job is what sets the standard.
My View on the Industry
Many clients focus heavily on price when choosing a contractor, and while cost matters, the lowest quote does not always reflect the best quality. Cutting costs at the excavation stage can lead to much higher costs further down the track. Poor drainage, unstable ground, and inaccurate levels create problems that are expensive to fix once construction is underway.
One area I see others cut corners on is preparation and finishing. These are often the stages that determine how well a project holds up over time, so I make sure they are done properly from the outset. I also believe the relationship between an excavation contractor and the other trades on a project works best when there is clear communication and mutual respect, as that is what leads to a strong outcome for the client.
Based in Northland
I am based in Northland and have built my work and reputation here. What I value about working in this region is the strong sense of community and the variety of projects it brings. It is a great place to do quality work and build long-term relationships with clients.
Outside of work, I like to stay active and spend time outdoors with my family. I am a straightforward person. What you see is what you get. Reliable, particular about doing things properly, and committed to delivering work that lasts.
