Trenching Contractor

TrenchingAlmost every residential build or property development requires trenching at some point. Whether it is running a water line to a new house, getting power underground to a shed, installing drainage across a section, or laying services for a new build, trenches need to be dug accurately, at the right depth, and then properly backfilled and compacted once the pipes or cables are in place.

At Lowkey Excavating, we handle trenching for a wide range of residential and rural applications across Northland. We dig the trench, coordinate with the relevant trade to get the service installed, then backfill and compact to leave the site tidy and ready for the next stage.

Drainage Trenching

Poor drainage causes more problems for properties than most people realise. Water that has nowhere to go will pond on the surface, saturate the ground, and over time can undermine foundations, damage driveways, and create ongoing issues that are expensive to fix.

Drainage trenching involves digging channels to the correct depth and fall so that water moves away from structures and off the property efficiently. Getting the grade right is critical. A drainage trench that is not accurately sloped will not drain properly regardless of what pipe goes into it. We use laser levels to ensure our drainage trenches are cut to the correct fall throughout their full length, so the system works as it should from day one.

Water Line Trenching

Whether you are connecting a new build to the mains supply, running water to an outbuilding, or extending a line across a lifestyle block, water line trenches need to be dug to the correct depth to protect the pipe from damage and comply with local requirements.

We dig water line trenches cleanly and accurately, working alongside your plumber to make sure the trench is in the right position and at the right depth before the pipe goes in. Once the pipe is laid and signed off, we backfill and compact the trench so the ground is restored properly.

Power and Telecommunications Trenching

Running power cables underground is a cleaner and more permanent solution than overhead lines, particularly on rural properties and lifestyle blocks where long cable runs are common. The same applies to telecommunications and fibre connections.

Power and data cable trenches need to be dug at the correct depth to meet the requirements of your electrician and the relevant network provider. We work alongside your electrician to make sure the trench is ready when they need it, and once the cables are in and any required conduit is laid, we backfill and compact to close the trench out.

Service Trenching for New Builds

New residential builds typically require multiple service trenches before the slab goes down or the foundation is complete. Stormwater, wastewater, water supply, power, and telecommunications all need to be in the ground at the right time and in the right place before construction progresses.

We work closely alongside builders, plumbers, electricians, and other trades to coordinate the trenching work around the wider build schedule. This kind of coordination matters on a new build, as trades are often working to tight timeframes and the excavation work needs to be ready when they need it, not after.

Backfilling and Compaction

Digging the trench is only half the job. Once the relevant trade has installed the pipe, cable, or conduit, the trench needs to be properly backfilled and compacted. A poorly backfilled trench will settle over time, leaving a depression in the ground, cracking any surface above it, and potentially allowing movement around the installed service.

We backfill our trenches in layers and compact as we go to ensure the ground is properly consolidated. Unless we are advised otherwise by the client or the relevant trade, backfilling and compaction is included as part of our trenching service.
