Timber Retaining Walls

Timber is one of the most common retaining wall materials in New Zealand and remains a practical, cost-effective choice for many residential applications. H5 treated timber is used for ground contact situations to ensure durability and resistance to rot and moisture over time.

Timber retaining walls suit low to medium height applications and blend well with garden and landscaping environments. They are a good option where the wall is not carrying significant surcharge loads and where budget is a consideration. We handle the full installation from post hole drilling and setting through to rail fixing, backfilling, and drainage behind the wall.

Concrete Block Retaining Walls

Concrete block retaining walls offer greater strength and longevity than timber and are suited to situations where more height or load capacity is needed. Concrete blocks do not rot, warp, or deteriorate the way timber can, making them a lower maintenance option over the long term.

We build concrete block retaining walls to suit the specific requirements of each site, working from engineer’s drawings where required. Proper drainage behind a concrete block wall is critical to its long-term performance, and we install drainage as part of every build to prevent water pressure building up behind the wall.

Keystone Retaining Walls

Keystone retaining walls use interlocking precast concrete blocks that lock together to form a gravity-based structure. They offer a clean, modern appearance and handle greater heights and loads than timber, making them a popular choice for residential sections, driveways, and larger landscaping projects.

One of the key advantages of the keystone system is flexibility. The blocks can be laid in curved alignments and stepped terraces to follow the natural contours of a site, which makes them well suited to the varied terrain common across Northland properties. For taller walls or walls carrying heavier loads, geogrid reinforcement is installed behind the blocks and tied into the compacted fill to anchor the structure further.
